How to maintain luxury vinyl flooring

Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) is one of those materials that answer every need,  especially the requirement of low maintenance.  After all, who has the time, or the desire, to scrub floors? All it takes to maintain (LVF) is daily sweeping and periodic mopping. This holds for any form, whether it be luxury vinyl tile flooring or luxury vinyl plank.

Be thorough when you sweep

Luxury vinyl
is very durable and can stand up to a lot of foot traffic.  Still, it will need some minimal TLC, and your floor will last a lot longer if you sweep regularly. Use a soft broom, and get into corners, under cabinets, and wherever you think dirt can hide.  If you don’t sweep regularly, two things can happen.  First, the dirt will embed and could scratch the urethane finish, creating a dullness.  Second, as the floor ages, the dirt will "pit," meaning that it will get into the tiny scratches and pores. You can clean pitted floors, but it takes a lot of hard work and elbow grease!

For deeper cleaning, use a well-rung mop (preferably microfiber) and an approved cleaner; we can help you choose. You can also make your own with one cup of apple cider (or white) vinegar and one-gallon hot water. Avoid wax, shine-promoting cleaners or steel wool, or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the finish and dull the floor;  if you think you need more shine, ask one of our experts for advice. Prevention is always better than treatment, so place the mats strategically at entrances and wipe spills immediately.

Removing scuffs and stains

Those “oops” moments do happen, so here are some tips: Fruit juice, ketchup, tomato sauce, or any acidic substance can be removed with a paste of baking soda and water. Rub with a soft towel until the stain lifts. Then, clean the floor with the vinegar and water solution you created. There is no need to run after the kids because lipstick, crayons, or markers come right off with a bit of rubbing alcohol and a soft-bristled brush. (Use nail polish remover on nail polish stains.) Scuffs? Spray WD-40 on a towel wipe until the marks disappear.  Then clean with the vinegar and water solution.

Luxury vinyl, which is also stylish, affordable, waterproof, and durable, will transform your home. Installation is also a snap because it can be a floating floor that is click, mat, and hover.  The First American Carpet & Floors showrooms are in Woodbridge and Stafford, VA.
